So I know that the Red Line from Harvard to Davis was completely screwed, with shuttling going on, but I'm wondering if anybody had issues with buses from Davis just... not coming? Specifically the 88.
We waited for an 88 heading to Lechmere with a young woman who had apparently just missed the last one, and we stuck around ten minutes past the arrival date (courtesy of mbta.com) of the 88 at Highland and School and then finally just took a cab. Returning at the end of our evening, ten minutes past the show-date for an 88 heading to Clarendon from Lechemere, we saw an 80 and took that instead. We texted a friend and there was nothing on the web site during that time about bus-fail.
Anybody else? It was f'ing cold out there.Current Mood: annoyed

This evening, I saw the film Ink with Shoshana. I'd pre-ordered the DVD for that film after seeing a story on Reddit about how pirated downloads of the movie had taken off. The thread mentioned that the studio was the same one behind this short film, which I'd really liked but had subsequently slipped my mind.
The story of Ink centers around a man who's life is in a downward spiral. He's grief-stricken over his wife's death, he's estranged from his daughter, and a major deal for his business is at risk of falling through. The story is also about two factions of warring spirits. The Storytellers, in balance with their emotions, bring pleasant dreams to humanity, guiding people towards their potential. The Incubi, on the other hand, have cut themselves off from their emotions, hiding behind a facade of vanity and pride, living in a hell of their own creation. They bring nightmares to humanity, drawing the vulnerable in to share their fate.
The movie is an excellent piece of independent cinema. The fantastic elements are interesting and fit well with the visual style of the movie, the story starts of enigmatic but fits together in the end, the visual effects do a wonderful job of conveying the blending of dream and reality, and the cinematography is stunning. The movie was done on a shoestring budget and the studio is doing their own distribution.
If you like independent cinema and dark modern fantasy, buy a copy. Or rent it. Or watch it with ads on Hulu.Current Mood: impressed

Do any of you use it? I've been trying, on and off, for awhile now to try to justify its existence by finding some type of application for it, but I've been largely unsuccessful.
The only possible niche I've found for it is to run informational widgets to conglomerate a lot of ready-to-display information (e.g. weather, CPU usage, etc) on the screen at once and quickly without having to launch full-fledged applications or visit a bunch of web pages. I'm also trying it out now for lightweight versions of one-shot applications, i.e. applications I'd launch to use once quickly and then quit (calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, and stuff like that).
What do you all think? |

I almost never actually visit the Facebook web site: I follow it through a feed reader (in my case, NetNewsWire) along with all of my other feeds. Besides the obvious benefits to this, one great side effect is that you never, ever see the output of applications (e.g., quiz results) or the other useless noise like "so-and-so is now friends with someone else you already know". The only drawback I've found is that you also don't see notifications about photos that your friends have uploaded. (You do see links that they post, however: just not Facebook-hosted photos. It's a bizarre omission.) Anyway, I just had to explain to someone how to accomplish this feat, which made me realize how completely non-obvious Facebook has made this. Finding these feeds is a complete pain in the ass. They've really gone out of their way to hide the URLs you need to use. So. You have to subscribe to three or four different feeds. - Posts: Find the Posts feed by going to http://www.facebook.com/posted.php. On the upper right of the page is a gray box, and at the bottom of that box is a link entitled "My Friends' Links" with the RSS logo next to it. Copy that URL. Subscribe to it in your feed reader. This is the RSS URL for any links and (external) images that your friends post.
- Notes: Find the Notes feed by going to http://www.facebook.com/notes.php and repeating the above. This is the RSS URL for things that your friends post via the "Notes" app, which is (I guess) the more blog-like way of posting long things to Facebook.
- Notifications: Find the Notifications feed by going to http://www.facebook.com/notifications.php and repeating the above. This is the RSS URL for things like "so-and-so commented on your status". You might not care to subscribe to this one because you can get all of these kind of notifications in email.
- Status Updates: This is the RSS URL for the "What are you doing?" Twitter-like part of Facebook. This is the one you probably care about, and it is trickier, because Facebook no longer links to the feed URL! Nice one guys. You have to construct this URL by editing one of the above URLs. E.g., take the "Notes" URL and change the part of the URL that says "friends_notes" to "friends_status". Keep the parts of the URL before and after that, including the magic numbers at the end.

Hi! Can any one think of a Cambridge/Somerville store that might sell candy thermometers? I've tried a few big supermarkets and they have meat thermometers but those don't go up high enough in temperature.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks!
Edited: Woo hoo! I called Tags and they say they carry them. Thanks for the suggestions all.
Now I can try my hand at these Fleur De Sel Caramels by Barefoot Contessa! :) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/fleur-de-sel-caramels-recipe/index.html

Is addicting a word? I've come across it several times in the last few weeks. Someone sent me a book with this note attached; "I hope you like this book. It was totally addicting to me." I'm certain that she meant to write addictive, but since it was about the fourth time I'd seen addicting used in such a short time, I'm starting to doubt myself.
So grammarians, help me out. When would you use addictive, and when would you use addicting (if at all)? |
